Job Description

Architectural Assistant (Part II / Equivalent)
Westcountry Region - Taunton

Start date - Spring 2024

Bondstones West Country team are based in the fantastic surroundings of the Grade 2* Hestercombe House & Gardens, located on the northern outskirts of Taunton, Somerset.  The team are experiencing unprecedented demand and are seeking candidates to bolster our architectural delivery / offer for private clients - throughout the South West and often beyond.

As part of our strategic expansion, this role is designed to launch planned progression within Bondstones - initially working alongside one of our Architectural team in undertaking our day to day architectural service provision and towards the role of an Architectural sub-team leader (and beyond).  As the business grows there will be continued opportunity to grow professionally and to take a more senior challenge as the West Country team and neighbouring regions develop...

The role:

We are presently seeking an outstanding candidate with demonstrable ability in delivering quality architectural output, focused most particularly on bespoke rural projects (mainly through RIBA Stages 0 - 4+) for our private clients. Experience and / or a background in rural land & property and related architectural work is essential...

Our workload / client demands focus predominantly on complex changes of use (conversions), heritage buildings, bespoke tourism projects and one-off domestic projects.  We are NOT a copy and paste housing developer style practice!  We find immense satisfaction that no two clients or projects are the same - every day and every job is different - every project is both challenging and rewarding...

As a successful candidate for this role - you will exude style, demonstrate confidence in delivery and design choices, will demonstrate the ability and desire to secure high-quality output (from yourself and others) and have the capacity to work in your own right as well as an integral member of a design team.  You will most especially align with our values; aside from raw ability, these are fundamental to our present and future success...

Requirements:

Please DO NOT apply if you do not have real world experience in the UK rural sector.  This is NOT an 'urban' architectural role and applicants with overseas 'equivalent' qualifications will NOT be considered.

You will demonstrate:

  • ability / experience in architectural delivery with a focus on rural work.
  • a hunger to grow professionally - we will welcome candidates seeking career progression and whom value collaborative working.
  • experience / ability in a variety of rural project types - especially conversions - through RIBA stages 0 - 4+
  • an interest in sustainability and 'fit for purpose' design.
  • Experience in areas such as estate/farm diversification, rural business projects, barn conversions, and heritage assets.
  • Familiarity with SketchUp / Layout and AutoCAD (both essential).
  • While a RIBA pathway is of interest - candidates from other professional backgrounds (CIAT, RICS, or similar qualifications) are welcome to apply.

The Role Involves:

  • Implementation of design from the commencement of new projects (both under direction from senior team members and on a self initiated basis) - especially throughout RIBA stages 0 - 4+
  • Complexe measured survey work / preparation of "as existing" document packages - including use of LiDAR scanning and Total Station equipment
  • Assisting colleagues at site visits and client meetings across the region
  • Preparing and assisting with development / design appraisals, reports, and feasibility studies for new projects
  • Working alongside our Planning Team in preparing statutory documents for planning submission (site plans, drainage plans, BNG plans, as existing / proposed drawing packages, D&A statements, etc)
  • Participation in team CPD and Training - both on the job learning and low-level training delivery to colleagues
  • Small project delivery (e.g. renovations and remodelling)
  • Design management, from initial surveys, through to building control, construction and assisting with contract administration.
  • Assisting senior colleagues with complex project delivery
  • Representing Bondstones at events, shows, events and through various communication channels.

Location and Terms:

  • Based at Hestercombe House, Taunton, you will be a key member of our growing Built Environment team
  • This Full Time role (42.5 hr week) is based in our West Country region - however projects will extend across the South and South West (requiring a full driving licence, means of transport and regular travel).
  • We offer a modern, flexible working environment, including 20 days holiday plus public holidays, additional Christmas leave and you can have your birthday off too!

If you are interested in Bondstones and feel you have something to offer that aligns with the above - but isn't a 100% match - please send a covering letter and CV...  We are working on growing our built environment team over the next 2 - 3 years and have ample scope to create new roles to accelerate our business plans - you may have exactly what we are looking for next...
